Workspace
Code, run and preview — all inside GenKid
No installing a development server and no API keys. The workspace runs learner code in an isolated sandbox in the browser, and the AI helper is provided by GenKid's own servers.
A real code editor
Syntax highlighting for HTML, CSS and JavaScript, with files laid out the way professional projects are.
Live preview
Run your code and see it straight away, with a console that shows your messages and errors in plain language.
Checkpoints
Projects are split into steps. 'Check my work' runs automated tests on your page and tells you what's working.
AI helper — hints first
Ask for a hint, an explanation, help debugging or a code review. Replies are labelled as AI-generated.
Save and history
Save whenever you like. Earlier versions are kept so you can go back if something breaks.
Reset safely
Start a project again from the original files without losing your other work.
Laptop and tablet
The layout adapts to tablet screens, with tabs to switch between code, preview and help.
Stops runaway code
If a loop never ends, GenKid stops it and explains what happened, instead of freezing.
What you can build now
- Web pages and apps with HTML, CSS and JavaScript: games, quizzes, tools, trackers.
- Phone-sized apps using responsive web design, previewed in a phone frame.
Not in this version (yet)
- Python, npm packages, React or back-end servers. These are planned for later stages using isolated cloud sandboxes.
- Internet access from learner projects. Previews can't load outside websites, images or data — that keeps them private and safe.
- Saving data in the browser (localStorage). Use GenKid's Save button for your code.
